There has never been a better time to be a writer. I say that knowing that many magazines have gone under and opportunities to get your words on paper are more limited than they were even 50 years ago. I say that knowing that more Americans go to the movies than read books and that screenwriting gigs are hard to come by. And I say that knowing that most writing assignments you are likely to be offered are going to be for a few bucks.

The reason is that sometime when most of us writers were not looking, the world changed. The Internet shook up a lot of things, including business, and it totally transformed the way many people do business.

I got interested in the Internet in a sort of off-hand way. I was just looking around. And I discovered that there were a lot of people carving out totally new business models there and making a lot of money. I’m not talking about some get-rich-quick deal. I’m just saying that the Internet was a whole new business frontier.

Then I found out something shocking. Most of these entrepreneurs working on the Internet frontier were looking for writers. As a matter of fact, the number one thing they gripe about (besides trying to find tax shelters for their money) is that they can’t find enough writers.

Now I’m not saying to write for these guys. They won’t pay you very much. What I’m saying is that if you’re a writer, you should consider becoming one of these guys.

After all, it’s easier for a writer to learn the Internet business terrain than it is for an Internet guy to suddenly grow talent for being a writer.

But what this means is that you have to change your mind about a lot things. That’s why we’re doing this site, to help you re-think your career as a writer. You’re going to end up more of a writer and more in control of your writing than ever before.
